What is CBT?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a Talking Therapy, which focuses on the links between how we feel, what we think and what we do. CBT helps you to understand how these areas influence each other, positively and negatively. It helps us to understand unhelpful patterns of thoughts and behaviours we may get stuck in , so we can understand and make positive changes. CBT is widely researched and recommended by NICE for many common mental health difficulties.
What is DBT?
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a type of talk therapy, based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), but it’s specially adapted for people who experience emotions very intensely.
“Dialectical” means combining opposite ideas. DBT focuses on helping people accept the reality of their lives and their behaviors, as well as helping them learn to change their lives, including their unhelpful behaviors.
What is ACT?
Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a type of psychotherapy that emphasizes acceptance to deal with negative thoughts, feelings, symptoms, or circumstances. ACT therapy encourages increased commitment to healthy, constructive activities that uphold your values or goals.
The theory suggests that increasing acceptance can lead to increased psychological flexibility. This approach carries a host of benefits, and it may help people stop habitually avoiding specific thoughts or emotional experiences, which can lead to further problems.
What is Mindfulness?
According to Professor Mark Williams, former director of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre, mindfulness is about “reconnecting with our bodies and the sensations they experience” which means “waking up to the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of the present moment.”
